Letter Writing

Letter of motivation

Hi to all of you!

I'm an austrian student who is applying for an international study programme in London. Therefore I have to write a letter of motivation. English is not my first language so I'm afraid that I have some mistakes in my letter and I wanted to ask you if you could have a look at it, please?

Best regards, John.

Letter of Motivation
-----------------------------------------

Dear Sirs or Madams (or “To whom it may concern” ?)

I am interested to apply for a Master’s Degree Program in Technology Entrepreneurship starting in 2013 at the University City of London. I am currently graduating at the University of Economics, Austria/Vienna, and will receive a Bachelor degree in “Business, Economics and Social Sciences” with a focus on “Business Informatics” in the end of May.

On the 17th of January 1989, I, John M. was born in Vienna, Austria. With 5 years I’ve entered the school of the Vienna Boys Choir, where I travelled a lot around the world, besides of 9 years of singing. With 14 years I finished the School at the Vienna Boys Choir and attended to the HTL (secondary technical school), where I got a 5 years education in “Electronic, Technical Informatics”. The last two years I finished my HTL education at the similar structured school named “TGM”, and got my maturation in “Biomedical Engineering”. The years at the HTL and the TGM laid the foundation of my achieved technical knowledge of today, and it had become a passion for me to build new electronic prototypes of which I had dreamed. For example I had built in 2009 a video-glass-helmet which could be plugged to every ego-perspective game. People which wear the helmet could look around in the video game like they do in the real world. They were also able to walk in the (real) room, while walking simultaneously in the game.

After school I knew that I have to achieve some business knowledge for building my own start-up, so I attended the best economics university in Austria, die University of Economics. I’ve studied “Business, Economics and Social Sciences” with a focus on „Business informatics“. More focused on speed than on grades I’ve managed to finish the programme in the minimum of the required time, I’m therefore among the top 15% of the students in my cohort. For the past four years I have been working next to my study, and for the past 5 months I’m hired as a software developer at a big software company in Austria.

Besides the college academics I’ve developed some web applications. One of them was a platform where user could ask questions and get answers from other user. I have built up a server, developed a web application and an iPhone and Android app. Another app which represents a new type of cooking assistance, was downloaded over 7000 times at the iPhone, Android and Windows Phone store. It is a huge success even without engagement from my side, because initially I developed that app for my own purpose.

In my free time I am extending my start-up knowledge with events like “TechNatives” or the “Pioneer Festival”, where successful entrepreneurs are giving lectures and people could exchange knowledge among themselves.

As you can see I am highly interested in the “Technology Entrepreneurship” programme at the University City of London. My interest has much to do with the information I acquired about its excellent interdisciplinary program and the program content itself. In Austria there is nowhere a programme like this one taught, so it would be a pleasure for me to attend that in the silicon valley of Europe, London. I’m well aware that the key for a successful start-up is the right knowledge and the right ideas. While having the last, I need the first. My aim is to start my start-up the right way, and I’m convinced that your programme would provide me with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills I need.

I would therefore, feel obliged to be able to secure admission in your prestigious university and pursue my MSc programme. I am sure that I will match all the credentials and will be able to maintain high standards at your university.
I thank you for considering my application and I look forward to your response.

With best regards,
John M.
