Letter of Motivation
Hi,
I am applying for a summer school and I have prepared a letter of motivation for the application.
Please let me know how I can improve.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to you in connection with my application for participation in ---------, 2013.
I am a doctor, presently working as a resident in Department of Medicine, Nil Ratan SIrcar Medical College, Kolkata, India. I will be awarded M.D. in General Medicine after the completion of my residency program in June this year. My aim is to become a clinician-researcher in the field of cognitive neuroscience and to achieve my goal I will pursue a doctorate degree in the subject.
I was attracted to neuroscience during my high school years when I attended the Biology Olympiad program, where I learnt about latest concepts on neuronal plasticity. Although I did not know about experimental techniques and many other details at the time, the experience inspired me to think about how our brain constantly adapts to the environment around us. During my medical school, I learnt about the structure and functions of the brain but it did not answer my original query. This led me to studying recent developments in neuroscience which fascinated me more than ever because of the intricacy of brain’s functions and the compactness of its structure.
As I gained clinical experience, I became interested in Alzheimer’s disease as the condition provided an opportunity in studying the cognitive processes. I also felt that as a doctor, I could help a large number of patients by diagnosing the disease at an early stage. My approach was to combine clinical and molecular understanding for the benefit of the patients. I have participated both in studies on proteomics of Alzheimer’s disease and comorbidities associated with Alzheimer’s disease for better management of such patients. The focus of my further research will be mechanisms of loss of neuronal plasticity in Alzheimer’s disease and its manifestations.
I am applying to the ------------- because I intend to learn about recent techniques in neuroscience which would be very beneficial for my future research. Apart from that, I think it will be a great opportunity to observe how leading researchers approach a scientific question. I hope to learn a lot from discussions with my fellow students too.
