Letter of intent for master on migration issues

Hello; i saw someone had posted a letter of intent here and I could also use some help, if you kindly can read mine as well. After reading the prior one posted, I realized mine still might need some work. I have to send it out in four days the latest. Thank you so much in advance!

Dear Dr. AAA

My name is BBB and I am writing to express my greatest interest in your program ECC.

After several months looking for a Master program providing training in migration processes, intercultural relations and the phenomenon of globalization from a social perspective, which could be both, diverse and comprehensive; I decided that ECC is the most suitable one for my current needs and educational aspirations, due to its interdisciplinary approach and the excellence of its faculty members and professors.

I am originally from DDD (of Basque and Italian ascendant), currently living in the USA. So I am myself the product of old and new migratory trends.

I graduated from the University with a degree in Psychology (Licenciatura en Psicologia) in 2004. This degree prepares students mainly for clinical practice, mental health counseling / therapy; but also provides a strong basis for quantitative and qualitative research.

Once in the USA I wrote my thesis entitled “EEE”. (2002-2004); which deals primarily with the different ways the members of three groups (professionals, entrepreneurs and manual laborers, according to classification by the former INS); have adapted to their new home; matters of identity and the relationships they have kept and developed along the way. Thus my thesis reflects my long-standing interest in Migration and Intercultural matters, which represent the central pillars of ECC.

Despite of the fact that I have not been able to formally practice in my field as a counselor yet, I have found a way to help thousands of immigrants navigate the judicial and medical systems by providing language services in my new place of residence and that has given me great satisfaction.

Nonetheless, my strongest desire is to join in the intellectual discussion about transnational movements, particularly in their articulation with social justice, human rights, civil liberty issues and conflict resolution; and receive advance research training in a state-of-the-art program such as ECC's; so as to have more decision-making power and the ability to contribute to the field.
I am also very interested in the prevention of violence against women and children, a problem that seems accentuated by the isolation and harsh economic conditions many immigrant families are exposed to. This is another very important reality I deal with on daily basis at FC.

ECC seems to present the right balance of theoretical framework, hands-on empirical research and fieldwork that I am looking for; in a context of true multicultural interactions and a variety of environments.

This makes an already appealing proposal far more compelling, since it offers its students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves not just in different academic milieus,-each with its own dynamics; but also, in the life of the host-communities; which, with their historical and cultural legacy (art, music, festivals, libraries, neighborhood events and, of course!, their languages); will certainly promote an empirical understanding of the phenomenon of intercultural relations.

I like the fact that at the ECC, with its cosmopolitan learner group, all students will have even if for a brief period of time, the opportunity to experience what being an immigrant, a foreigner, might feel like. Walking in somebody else's shoes is a powerful trial-and-error way of gaining knowledge and, when becoming one's own subject of observation; nothing better than doing so in the safety and cordiality of an academic institution like ECC.

I'm convinced that I am a great candidate for your program because of my academic, personal and work experience. Having to understand and reproduce speech from/for people with very different educational backgrounds and countries where Spanish is an official or a de-facto language; has helped me fine-tune both, my cultural sensitivity and my ear to linguistic nuances and non-verbal communication; which is very important in the judicial process.

I understand that you prefer students who obtained their degree not earlier than 2008, but I can assure you you will not regret accepting me in your Master Program. Please also consider me for the EM scholarship, since it would otherwise be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for me to join and stay at ECC. I am committed to working hard and with enthusiasm in obtaining my master degree.

Sincerely,

BBB
