Letter Writing

Letter of intent

Hello, I noticed some people post their letters here for critique/feedback and was hoping I could receive the same.

I'm writing a letter of intent to get into a Master's of Public Health Program and was wondering if whoever reads this
would agree that I "answered" the questions posed by the committee and if, in general, it seems like a strong letter to gain entry into the program. The guidelines for the letter and the letter are as follows.

Thank you Emotion: smile

"The letter of not more than 800 words should outline a synthesis of the applicant's background (scholastic/academic training and work/research experience), motivation for applying to this degree and career goals"

Dear Sir or Madame:

I am writing to express my interest in applying for a Master's Degree in Public Health at your university. I have completed a Bachelor’s of Science, and during my studies I became greatly interested in health sciences. I completed courses in microbiology, immunology, as well as anatomy and physiology and these solidified in my mind the role of health sciences in maintaining the well-being of the general population. At one point in my undergraduate career, I came to realize that in order to have a positive influence on the maintenance of human health, it is important to focus on the prevention of “disease” instead of simply treating the conditions after they occur. This realization inspired me to pursue a career in public health, specifically health policy and management where I can become involved in developing policies geared towards enhancing and maintaining the health of populations through the provision of excellent health care and health education, as well as manage the necessary resources (financial, human, physical) necessary to provide health information and the best quality of health care within the community, as well as on an international stage.
I feel that my strong interest in health sciences coupled with related experiences make me an excellent candidate to become involved in public health planning. At the beginning of my undergraduate career, I started out by volunteering with a senior’s recreational group that my grandmother used to be a part of. I would help prepare/serve snacks, work on crafts with them, and most importantly, serve as a translator for them; specifically translating and explaining informational pamphlets illustrating the conditions affecting the elderly (e.g. high blood pressure, stroke, arthritis). Most of the members were Hispanic and spoke a limited amount of English and so I felt it was important to make this information available to them. Language or ethnicity should not pose as a barrier to the acquisition of important information regarding one’s well-being. I then volunteered at the ABC Hospital. The most important thing I gleaned from my duties was how to be a helping hand to patients and families of patients, whether it was directing a family member to the appropriate ward, or providing a patient with a vase of flowers and some friendly conversation. In every situation I would find myself in, I would make every effort to relate to the person I was dealing with, and attend to their immediate needs, depending on the situation. Last summer, I travelled to Honduras, mainly to the surrounding rural areas volunteered to help in whatever was needed at the local clinics, small hospitals and at a dispensary (pharmacy). At the clinics I was instructed to help patients fill out paperwork, and assist the nurse with her duties. One clinic in particular that had a “women’s unit”, and I was to go over methods for birth control, tubal ligation, care before, during and after pregnancy, and during menopause, with the patients. Some other clinics were trying to implement units for pediatric care, and geriatric care and I’m hoping to have the opportunity to go back to see what help I can offer to these clinics, as I feel it’s important for specialized health care to be made available to the citizens in developing nations, as they are in need, yet lack the resources or organization to implement these.
Through the attainment of a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree, I hope to become a public health planner who plays a role in building healthy and informed communities by developing and promoting the implementation of collaborative strategies targeted at solving health-related problems through education and proper care. Obtaining entry into the MPH program at DEF University a will allow me to develop the leadership, research and decision-making skills, as well as permit me to attain the necessary credentials I need in order to be competitive in the public health workforce. One of the strongest features of the programs at the University is the focus on providing students with programs that are accessible, flexible and of high professional standards, so the graduates can develop academic abilities into the strong skill sets that are necessary to excel in the field, and I would like to be one of those graduates.
Sincerely,
Anne X
