letter of complaint

Landlord and Tenant Advisory Board
Alberta Canada

To whom it may concerned:

I am writing to complain of the excessive amount security deposit that was asked by the landlord, Mr. Khun Lee. Mr. Lee requested deposit that is more than half a month’s rent. Also, I would like my security deposit back.

On March 23, 2016, We went to Grande Prairie Ab from Edmonton Ab to see the house. Mr. Lee told us to sign the contract or else somebody could rent it. We badly needed a place to stay by April 4th, 2016. Because we were desperate to have a house to live, I signed the tenancy agreement for 72 Valley Road, Grande Prairie, Ab. Since we are new in Canada, my wife and I did not know about security deposit guidelines.

I’ve heard a lot of negative comments from other immigrants about Mr. Lee a day after I signed the contract. According to them, Mr. Lee did not return their security deposits and he would sneak in the house without asking permission. My previous landlady, Tara Bennett was concerned about the place so she reviewed the contract. She found out that the security deposit was over charge. The monthly rent was $660, but Mr. Lee asked $500 for security deposit. Mr. Lee did not give us the official receipt. I’ve just printed the deposit cheque transaction from the bank for you to look.

Tara Bennett and I called Mr. Lee through 3 way phone on March 25, 2016. I wanted to cancel the tenancy agreement because I don’t want to deal with a dishonest landlord and taking advantage of us. The house also did not meet our standards for health and cleanliness since we have a baby and a young child. Mr. Lee told us that he would return the deposit ($500) on Saturday, March 26, 2016. We went to Grande Prairie from Edmonton to see Mr. Lee and to get our deposit, but he did not come out. He had lots of reasons. Until now, he did not return our deposit.

Mr. Lee said he would return the deposit if someone would give a deposit and rent the house in April. The neighbour at 72 Valley Road told me that someone had just move in at that house on the first week of April 2016.

I would really appreciate it if you could help me return our $500 security deposit.

If you need further information, you may contact me at this number 403-0000-000 or email Email Removed.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Vladimir
