“Let’s not make this hard on ourselves, okay

Could someone help me understand the meaning of the words involved in the phrase, please? I was looking up the words in the dictinary and I have a general idea of what the phrase means. I need to know the meaning of the words: make this AND hard. I am having a bad time figuring out why each of those words were used. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I suggest that we not create problems (for ourselves). I suggest we do this the easy way.
