Let's go [on/ for] a picnic or something.

Garrie : Are you working weekend?
Thomas: No, the project is finally done.
Garrie: Thank God. I really hate it when you have to work on Sunday.
Thomas: This Sunday let's have some family time together.
Garrie: That's great. Let's go on a picnic or something. Should I call your brother?

I'd like to know why "on" is used, not "for."
Thank you in advance for your help.

There is a word missing between "working" and "weekend". It could be this, next or that.

There's no difference in meaning.
Another one: He went on/for a walk.
