Let the wine breathe

Hi teachers,

Would you please confirm if "let the wine breathe" is correct in English usage? If it does, what does it mean?

Thank you.

Yes that is correct. Letting wine breathe, (or aerate), is maximizing the wine's exposure to the surrounding air. By allowing wine to mix and mingle with air, the wine will typically warm up and the wine's flavour will improve.

Hi Louise T,

Thanks for helping me.

Since you say "aerate" I have a question that I asked and answered before but I think I didn't express very clearly so I will ask one more time. If you steam a shirt, and it's now hanging on a rack wet, waiting for it to dry out. Would you say this process "to aerate" and say "let the shirt breathe"?

Thanks again.

Hello

The term "breath" is used in very particular ways. For example, people breath, wine breaths and we say that certain fabrics breath when they let air through them (such as cotton or linen).

We would not say a shirt was hung up to breath or to aerate. You would say it was hanging up to dry or to air.
