Let it hang a while

Hi teachers,

I cannot put the words together to make sense. Would you tell me how to express it?

When I unpacked a carton of garments, because of the long journey of shipping across the ocean, they carry this smell. To rid of this smell, you can let them hang in an air circulated area for a while.

Thank you very much.

Hi Grammar Greek,

Thank you for your help.

1. Let it hang outside for a while.

>> Would this mean something else?

2. Would you correct my sentence below?

When I unpacked a carton of garments, because of the long journey of shipping across the ocean, they carry this smell.

Thank you.
