I wonder if there is subtle difference between "1" and "2".

For example, 1 is more polite?

i once read an article where the writer half-seriously joked that people in the hospitality department prefer 'may i be of service' or 'let me be of service' in stead of the active form, simply because it puts the client in position of power. asking 'may i help you' might make the client feel handicapped.
