Hello everyone, this is my essay about lessons learned in project management. Please, if you could review it and tell me how is it, and help me to improve statement and structure of it. Thanks a lot in advance.
Lessons learned.
First lesson. Constant communication - this lesson is important for me because it taught me how to avoid in future poor situational awareness and poor communication. During our first group meeting we divided into sub-groups with different task and deadlines. With one of my group mates I did airports part of the project. We set deadline to present into the group our work before the final presentation but did not discuss with them our progress during the interim meetings and we did not inform them constantly about our progress. Finally, when we presented in front of the group, it appeared that we had chosen the wrong direction and the whole our work was wrong. The group trusted us and expected the reliable work from us for the client, if we had constant communication and discussion with them during interim meeting we avoided the failure. It lot of additional time to change the whole and present the correct one.
In future, this lesson will be valuable whenever I will have the group task at work, I will discuss every progress and step of my work with my group mates and colleagues this will increase communication and trust between team members, improves team working and quality of the work and time. In this example I experienced how to learn and recover from failure.
Second lesson. To convince people – given my experience in project management this particular lesson was a very impressive experience that taught me how to be more persuasive person when you definitely know that someone in the group made incorrect decision that will adversely affects the whole group’s performance in front of the client. For the final presentation our project manager allocated all group members and assigned them different tasks. Personally, I was responsible to take some notes and measure the time during my group’s presentation. On the other hand, we knew that everyone was responsible to participate and speak in front of the client. Even I felt uncomfortable with this decision and knew that the decision would affect our overall outcome and score, I did not say a word and did not convince the project manager to change his decision. The final presentation show that my participation to take only notes and not speak affected the overall group performance and the client was somehow confused.
Through the above example, I realised that in future when I am sure in my decision, I have to fill more confident and I should go ahead and convince top managers, project managers or clients in the right decision which will avoid the future disappointment. In addition, this lesson can be part of the decision making. I experienced that even you have a very good proposal or project for the client if you perform badly you cannot convince them.
