lessons in/on?

Hello,

He gave lessons on biology.
He gave lessons in biology.

Is it in or on?
I know it is better to say
he gives biology lessons,
but I want to know if IN or ON is correct.

Thank you.

in biology, history, music However, I would say on the piano, saxophone, etc.

HI,
Thanks for your reply.
That's confusing.
Can you explain?

It's a fine point. If you use "on" with any subject, I don't think it could be faulted. Or you can avoid it with "He gave biology (or piano) lessons". Using this construct, you also avoid any ambiguity with e.g. "He gave lessons in French" or "He gave lessons on the piano".

Thanks for your response.
But I am still not clear about WHEN to use IN/ON...
Can someone clarify further?
Thank you.
