Less... than...=not... so much as?

I came to think about whether the structure "less... than..." is equivalent to "not... so much as..." when I came across the following sentence in an article from a graduate school entrance test paper.

1. The fourth edition of (a book title) says "pathological gambling" involves persistent , recurring and uncontrollable pursuit less of money than of thill of taking risks in quest of a windfall.

I wonder if the original sentence is equivalent to my version?

2. The fourth edition of (a book title) says "pathological gambling" doesn't involve the persistent, recurring, and uncontrollable pursuit of money so much as the thrill of taking risks in quest of a windfall.

I have previously asked the question here.

https://forum.wordreference.com/threads/less-of-money.3339817/#post-16921694

The native speakers on WR told me there is a difference between "less... than..." and "not... so much as...". But I still don't know what the difference(s) is/are. Would you please tell me what the differences are?

Thank you, dear teachers.
