LESS THAN or INFERIOR

Which would you use please?

The grand total can't be inferior/less than the number that adds up to the grand total.
The grand total is usually a positive number not a negative one.

Can you use POSITIVE and NEGATIVE like that?
Is the bold part OK too?

Thank you

'Inferior' and 'superior' have to do with quality. I don't know what you mean by 'the number that adds up'. One number cannot add up.
