Lend sb to doing sth

Certain types of natural conditions favor preservation of organic substances and therefore lend themselves to sheltering well-preserved organic remains.

I did not understand why to sheltering was used instead of to shelter (... lend themselves to shelter well-preserved...)

Why is "to" used as a preposition instead of just to form the infinitive?
