Yes, I am confused in trying to figure out which way the pitcher and catcher are viewing themselves and the other.

So it's confusing to native speakers. No wonder it's confusing to me. Actually, what I have here is this:
He was frustrated at how inaccurate his son's pitching control was, so he changed his catching position to the left because his son's ball tended to go to the right side.
