LEFT OUT or TAKEN OUT / WHICH ARE or WHICH IS

Which would you say please?

- The word can't be taken/left out?

- Which is/are grammatical?

I'm no expert but depending on the context I would say, the word can't be left out. Unless you're talking about (for example) files that you are downloading or emails that you're forwarding. I've run into this problem a few times where I receive an email that I want to forward to someone, but there's an error in the body of it.
