led us through the mountains

Our guide led us through the mountains.

Please explain the highlighed parts.

I am confused because I don't know how we can walk through the mountanins because I used to climb up the mountain. Also, because I don't know the exact meaning of led "in this context". I know lead means "to show the way" generally.

Please you help me.
