Leaving (the) school

(1) Yesterday, I saw many students leaving school at noon. I wondered what happened.

(2) Yesterday, I saw many students leaving the school at noon. I wondered what happened.

I am not sure if I need the definite article. Please help me. Thanks a lot.

Both are correct. the school sounds like you mean a specific school, eg the school near my home. school refers to school in general, not a specific school.

Both are correct.

the school sounds like you mean a specific school, eg the school near my home.

school refers to school in general, not a specific school.
