Leave sb to

In Watchmen they say: "I leave the human cockroaches to discuss their heroine"

Is: "I leave the human cockroaches discussing their heroine" also correct?

If so, does it keep its meaning as in "being indifferent, let them do whatever they want to do".

If not, how can you say "leave sb to do sth" in a different way without another meaning?
