Leave out the subject, when?

Hi,
when can I leave out the subject? I know I can do that when "and" is present, but what about "but"?

This seems good, but (it) is not.
I tried to search for that stuff, but (I) didn't find anything.

Both and and but allow that construction. I think that's what N2G was trying to tell you earlier.
