Leave off vs stop

Could you tell me whether differences between "I gotta stop smoking" and "I gotta leave off smoking" exists?

Both look substandard because of "gotta." It's okay in very informal speech but never in writing.

In American English we would say "I've got to stop smoking" or "I've got to quit smoking."
