Leave ground empty

Hi

There is an expression in my language whose literal translation would be something like this:

Leave ground empty (for your opponent)

  1. By not contesting, he left the ground empty for those participating.
  2. He boycotted and did not play. He did not realize he was leaving the ground empty for his opponents.

Would this expression make sense to native ears? Or is there any equivalent?

Thanks,

Tom
