Leave for dead

What is the meaning of "Leave for dead" or "Give up for dead" ?
Can we use other adjectives instead of "dead" as in "leave for sick" or "leave for insane" ?

Top answer

It means you abandon someone, assuming they are (or soon will) be dead. I don't think you can use it for any other words, but maybe someone can come up with something.

No. Or very rarely. I've seen "give up for hopeless" and "give up for impossible".
