Learn/learn of/learn about

Could you tell me why I should say "I learned of her arrival from a close friend" instead of " I learned her arrival from a close friend?" Also, which one is right among "How did they react when they [learned/learned of/learned about] the news?" Could you tell me the difference between 'learn', 'learn of' and 'learn about'? Thank you in advance.
