I think some learners worry too much about learning one particular variety or another.

While there are undoubtedly differences between the main varieties of English in lexis, grammar and pronunciation, and there can be misunderstandings, generally speakers of the standard dialects of the main varieties can communicate with each other without much real difficulty.

I have no idea what the statistics show on this matter, but more people in the world speak American English than any other variety of English, so it's quite possible that more people prefer it.
