learning curve

Hi,

If you say that a certain learning curve is very steep, is it normally a negative or positive fact/characteristic? In other words, is it good for a learning curve to be steep enough? :-)

Also, what other words collocate with 'learning curve'?

(1) steep
(2) flat?
(3) short?

I guess it depends on how you look at it. It usually means that you will learn fast (which is good) but may require a lot of effort on your part (which is possibly (or sometimes) bad).

The steeper the learning curve, the longer it takes to master the subject matter.

Steep is most common: Also possible is "long."
Mastery of chess has a long learning curve.
