Learnglish

There's a Web page headed "Learnglish" that has a huge number of alt.usage.english postings that are offered without, so far as I've found, giving any credit to alt.usage.english. The author of each posting is shown, but the names have been stripped from the intermediate attributions.
They try to give the impression that the discussions they've appropriated have taken place in forums at their Web site. One "forum" consists of a very long 2003 thread about the pronunciations (AEmotion: smile, (A.), and (OEmotion: smile. (The second posting in the list has Peter Moylan saying "Heads down, everyone; here comes another CINC thread".)
I don't think the plagiarizers have done anything illegal, since alt.usage.english postings are effectively public domain, but it certainly seems to me their plagiarization without giving credit to the newsgroups they've helped themselves from is seriously unethical. The (A:) et al page is at http://tinyurl.com/6enbha *, A list of links to their "latest forum postings" is at
http://www.learnglish.com/ . The "forums" I looked at were more wholesale liftings from alt.usage.english and from uk.culture.language.english. On that page is a link to "Terms of Use", and a link to "Contact us".

  • aspx/english/1082/ah-ar-aw-or-aw-ah-ar [/nq] This is pretty common, and you have to understand that Usenet is slowly disappearing being replaced by the http.
  • In fact they provide access to lots of interesting things said on the Usenet to the majority of the Internet users.
