1) I learned how to play the guitar rapidly.

2) I learned to play the guitar rapidly.

3) I learned playing the guitar rapidly.

In which of the above sentences:

a) "rapidly" modifies "learned"

in which:

b) "rapidly" modifies "play" or "playing"

and which are ambiguous?

Top answer

They're all ambiguous to my ear, and they all lean toward combining 'rapidly' with the verb 'play' for me. Not everyone will necessarily have the same reaction. For the other interpretation I'd go for I quickly learned to play the guitar.
