Learn for or to

Hello!

I'm wondering what preposition is correct in this sentence: "One shouldn't learn for grades but for deepening/to deepen the knowledge of the surrounding world".

I've got one more question. If I use the word "man" in the meaning of "people" what pronoun is right? He? He/She, or perhaps "they"?

Thank you
