Leafs vs leaves

M&W says that both "leafs" and "leaves" are plural forms of "leaf". Is there any rule on their usage? Or is it only a regional/dialect variation?

Thanks,
Fernando

  • Maybe pages from a book, but I can't imagine doing it.

Depends on the meaning of leaf. If it's the tree-bits, it's always "leaves".

I think I'd go with "leaves" for this sense, too, but if you Google for "table" and "leafs" you'll find a large number of hits for it in the sense of MWCD11 sense 2b(2):
the movable parts of a table top
