Lead/wire

Hello,

I am doing an exercise from Advanced Language Practice.In the following sentence the correct answer is lead.

I can't use my drill here. The lead/plug/wire isn't long enough

Why is wire incorrect?

The answer (in British English) is lead (pronounced leed ). An American would probably call it a cord , or power cord . Although it is a wire, we don't call it that.

In that sentence, "lead" is nonsense in American English.
A lead is a rope that you attach to a horse's halter so you can lead him wherever you want.
