leads and clues

Hello,
A clue can be a fact, piece of information, object. Leads on the other hand are pieces of information or objects. What exactly is the difference between them? The leads, logically lead us directly to the suspect.

Does that mean there's a certain amount of overlap? Leads and clues can both be pieces of information, but provided by a different source. Detectives look for clues, whereas witnesses can provide the detectives with leads. Yes?
