Lead(chess)

Hi.
What does it mean that in open positions pieces(not pawns)lead the attack?
The paragraph reads:

To clear lines for your pieces in closed positions, you must start with pawn attacks. Contrast this strategy with that for open positions, in which the pieces lead the attack.

Thanks in advance

How can one differentiate between different dictionary senses for 'lead'? And how do they relate to each other?
Is 'lead' a project more relevant here, or to 'lead a convoy (be the foremost)?
