Lead down

Again it's a movie subtitle

You're the one what killed those men, by leading them down the wrong path.

Now here I don't understand why speaker added "down" what if he didn't add "down" would the meaning be different?

Liton Das I don't understand why speaker added "down" "lead (someone)" with "path" must have a preposition in between. lead them along the path lead them up the path lead them down the path lead them the path is meaningless. The verb 'lead' works like other verbs that relate to one person taking a second person from one place to another.
