Lays/Lies

Hi. I just read the screenplay to the movie The sixth sense, where a line reads:

Cole lays rigid in the hospital bed.

Why is it 'lays' and not 'lies'?

anonymous Why is it 'lays' and not 'lies'? Whoever wrote that either never bothered to learn the language he speaks, is foreign and does not have that distinction under his belt yet, or has bowed to popular usage which has muddled the conjugations of "lie" and "lay".

Because the author, like battalions of people, has never mastered the use of the verbs "lie" and "lay". Typically, "lay" is preferred over "lie". Truth be told, nobody pays attention to the difference anymore. At least that's how it looks to me.
