Laying it out there?

Hi, there. I would like to know if I can use the term "laying it out there" in this context. Can it just mean to tell something to someone?

'Why didn't she tell you that right away?'

'I think she might have felt uncomfortable laying it out there because she didn't know how I would react.'

That is a conflation of "to lay something out", meaning to explain it in detail, and "to put something out there", meaning to expose it to public scrutiny. I would wince but would understand.
