LAYED VS. LAID

Have always thought the hen layed the egg ( as in produced) but the clothes were laid (as in put down/spread out) out on the bed. So the best layed/aid plans I thought woudl refer to the production of more than just putting down??

I'm afraid you've always thought wrong. There is no "layed". The egg is laid, and the clothes are laid out on the bed.

That doesn't mean you won't see 'layed' written all over the place, sometimes even in reputable sources.
