Both are correct, but they are different tenses:

what lay ahead => past simple form of the verb "to lie"

what lies ahead => present simple form of the verb "to lie"

well it depends on wether you are speaking in the past ( in which case it's lay ahead)

or the present ( in which case it's lies ahead).
