Laws

Hi,

What do you call the laws that are of bigger importance than other laws? Are those called 'higher ranked laws'? Perhaps laws that have a higher rank?

To me, it is not immediately obvious what "higher-ranked laws" would mean. It kind of gives the impression of a hierarchy in which some laws have legal precedence over others. g.

To me, it is not immediately obvious what "higher-ranked laws" would mean. It kind of gives the impression of a hierarchy in which some laws have legal precedence over others.

By "of bigger importance", do you mean that they deal with more important issues (e.g. a country's constitution), as opposed to fairly trivial ones (e.g. parking restrictions)?

If a newer law conflicts with an older one, it has precedence. It supersedes the older legislation even if there was no formal act of repeal.
