Vocabulary

Law v.s. the law

Hi,

Could you tell me which sentences are correct, please?

1.1. The company operated within the bounds of American law
1.2. The company operated within the bounds of the American law

2.1. The company operated within the boundaries of American tax law
2.2. The company operated within the boundaries of the American tax law

I think that 1.2 and 2.2 are wrong and the other two are right.

Thanks !

1 are referring to the general body of American (tax) law and are the most likely choices. 2 are less likely but possible. They may be referring to a specific American (tax) law that has been mentioned earlier.

1.1 and 2.1 are referring to the general body of American (tax) law and are the most likely choices.

1.2 and 2.2 are less likely but possible. They may be referring to a specific American (tax) law that has been mentioned earlier. If the general body of law is meant then 1.1 and 2.1 are in my view preferable.
