Laura Spira's craving for love

I suppose we all want attention; all of us want to be loved. Laura's obsession for wanting to be liked by all is a bit hard to fathom though. She's petite and pretty, she can be pleasant if one doesn't read between the lines, and she's already one of the most popular AUEers. She wants more, it seems; she tries harder than is necessary. Her have-sympathy-for-me-because-I'm-an-oppressed-Jew attitude doesn't come across at first glance, but since I know her well and because we were, at one time, good friends, until I pointed out to her I recognized her ploy, I easily see it. Again and again.

I am careful and logical and I look things up I don't understand! When I hear people use the wrong words I get edgy! I am good with cheese. I read books fast. I /think/! And I always have a piece of string. That's the kind of person I am! (Pratchett, Wee Free Men)

I was pointing out some of the reasons for her ingratiating behaviour, trying to make some sense out of them, not demonstrate how to win friends and make enemies; social animals know how to do that quite well already.

No, he doesn't! He has a very valid point about how minorities think everyone should feel sorry for them because of their minority status. Spira, as I recall, once told someone off bec

Your great-grandparents were alive in '43? HOW YOUNG are you, Vass? You definitely keep saying things that suggest that you are around my age. Two or three of MY great-grandparents were dead by '43, and the rest were dead by the 60's or 70's.

That's an interesting concept to think about: were the Jews on any side in WW2? Was a German Jew on the German "side" even though he opposed the German government-in-place and was not

Last night was the second full moon in July. According to some, that made it a "blue moon". The relationship of the color blue to two full moons in a calendar month escapes me.
