Launching a world-wide campaign/activity/event

The Cambodia Daily is launching a world-wide campaign to wipe out malaria in Cambodia.

HI,

Can I replace "campaign" in the above with "activity" or "event?" If not, can you explain why? Thanks.

No, you can't. A campaign is ' an organised course of action to attain a goal' (WordReference dictionary). An activity or event could be a raffle or car boot sale, which doesn't come close to a campaign .

You can't replace "campaign" with "activity" or "event" because they don't mean "campaign". They are much less informative words than "campaign".

It's like changing "I lost my wallet" to "I lost something". Yes, you can make that replacement, but why would you want to?

Thanks, Rover.

But I still don't know the meaning of "an organized course of action." What on earth is a course of action?"

Because those three words are similar when translated into Chinese.

An event is a one-time occurence, whereas a campaign never occurs only once. You can not have one event that wipes out malaria.

A campaign is a collection of events, activities, actions with a goal of, in this sentence, wiping out malaria. They might write letters, advertise on TV, host events that raise money, etc. This is all part of their campaign.

A course of action
