later years

Generally, does "later years of someone" mean his/her life in their eldery time?

But it can mean different depending on context?
What about this sentence.
1. "Bruce Lee looking more like the philosopher and wise man in his later years"

With this only single sentence, we can't decide what "later years" means?

Usually it would refer to their old age, but I suppose it could refer to the later years of their career etc. Since Bruce Lee was in his early thirties when he died it can't be talking about his old age here. I presume it is comparing his last few years to the early part of his life.
