Later vs Later On

What is the difference between later and later on ?

For example, the following sentence is wrong according to a grammar book:

She will meet us later on.

And says the correct one is:

She will meet us later.

Why?

Thanks in advance!

I recommend that you find another grammar book. There is nothing wrong with your first sentence. 'Later on' just means subsequently, indicating that something else happening earlier is somewhere in the context.
