Later on

We met and talked several times. One week we could talk about serious stuff, like her disease, while the next week we could talk about something lighter. Later on I didn't hear anything for a long time, so I figured she was doing better and didn't need my company anymore.

Is Later on ok in the context? Would Afterwards be better? Thank you.
