Later - comma

Hi!

Where do I need to put a comma in the following sentence - after later or after in 2012? Or comma is not needed?

- "Later in 2012 he joined our laboratory..."

Thank you!

If some event happening in 2012 has already been mentioned, and he joined later in that same year, it should be "Later in 2012 he joined our laboratory...".

If the narrative has previously been describing events in years before 2012 then it should be "Later, in 2012, he joined our laboratory..."
