"Later"

At the end of a message or personal letter, I saw some people said, "later". Is that mean "talk later"?

Is it a commona and natural saying in English? Is it only good for informal talking? Usually, we'll saying something like this at end of a letter. Are there another way to say this? Would you show me?

Thanks!
