Late. Possible Paraphrase?
Hi teachers,
Would, 'after the usual time' work for 'late' in this paragraph?
He arrived at ten past nine, late as usual. Mr. White hasn’t come to work yet. He's the boss, so he sometimes comes late, but he often stays late, too.

It would work in the middle and last examples, but not in the first one. It would sounds strange to say after the usual time, as usual. As a matter of style, I would use after the usual time only in the middle example, so that the phrase isn't overused in the text as a whole.
