late / early on Friday

Police said 10 Taleban militants were killed late on Friday when a roadside bomb they were trying to plant, near the town of Musa Qala, exploded.

This is an extract from BBC website. Which time frame does "late on Friday" indicate? Can I say "early on Friday"? If yes, which time frame will it refer to? Thanks
